The South Caribbean Region of Costa Rica has an atmosphere all to its own. This region extends from Limon down to the Panama border. This region offers a variety of activities and cultures. Some of the major attractions in the Caribbean Region are Selva Bananito Preserve, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo de Limon, and Manazanillo. A trip to the Caribbean Region can include a white water rafting tour on the Sarapiqui or Pacuare Rivers, then a couple of night at Selva Bananito for a waterfall rappel hike, and then down to the beach to enjoy the warm water and great beaches of the Caribbean. In this region you will find small ecolodges and beach bungalows.

Probably the main attraction to this region is Puerto Viejo to Limon and Manazanillo. Here you will find some of the nicest beaches in Costa Rica. Manazanillo has a great reef to snorkel right off the beach. Near the center of Puerto Viejo you will find ?Salsa Brava" which offers surfers the chance to ride a great break with waves that can reach 40 feet.

One of the most amazing aspects of the Caribbean Coast is that it is an ethnic melting pot, including local Afro-Caribbean people that migrated to Costa Rica to work the farms and railroad in the 19th century. Now this region, especially Puerto Viejo, offers a completely different culture and experience than that of other regions in the country. Here you will hear Spanish, English, and the Caribbean Patois. This is the only area of the country that has a strong Afro-Caribbean/Reggae atmosphere with unique foods, crafts and music.

This area enjoys high temperatures averaging in the high 80s Fahrenheit (25 ? 30 Celsius). You can expect to have rain in the afternoons, with the rainy season between November - January. The best time to visit is between August and October, when other regions have their rainy seasons.
